Renowned for its natural beauty, the South Island is blessed with tranquil and picturesque lakes, rugged mountains, wild rivers and lush forestry. Your journey starts in the year round resort town of Queenstown. Queenstown is fantastic for adventures and indulgence as well as being the perfect base for the surrounding towns and all they have to offer. Haast is a bird watcher’s paradise and the wondrous Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers should not be missed. Awe inspiring Mount Cook, Lake Tekapo and Lake Wanaka are all beautiful scenic locations. Activities undertaken and attractions visited are all your decision, however we recommend taking time to explore, get off the beaten track, and have an adventurous journey.

The rest of the journey includes seeing huge limestone caverns with glow worms (Waitomo Caves) and seeing the amazing geothermal activity in Rotorua (plus experiencing a zorb ride!). Last but not least you can experience Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum in Wellington, which is a world-leader in interactive museum experiences. This itinerary is packed with fun activities for the kids.

In a small village in the Shire a young Hobbit named Frodo was entrusted with an ancient Ring. He had to embark on an Epic quest to the Cracks of Doom in order to destroy it. Come and see why Peter Jackson knew New Zealand was the perfect location to film the Middle Earth trilogy. Land around Matamata was transformed into the village of Hobbiton, where Frodo’s journey began. The Mount Ruapehu region became the Emyn Muil, where Frodo and Sam captured Gollum. Nearby are the slopes of Mt Doom (home to Sauron). Capital city Wellington region is where the hobbits escaped the Black Riders and it was home to the cast and crew for over three years. In the South Island, visit Nelson City and Jens Hansen Gold & Silversmith Jewellers (creator of the original LOTR ring). The flat Canterbury Plains stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the peaks of the Southern Alps were the location for the Rohirrim city or Edoras and the Court of Meduseld (home of King Theoden). The varied landscapes in the Queenstown Region meant most of the country side scenes were filmed here.
